Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.

Early in his writing career Edgar Rice Burroughs discovered a rather unsettling thing: the more money he made, the more he had to pay in income taxes! In the early 1920s Ed Burroughs, a businessman, investigated various possibilities that would allow him to retain more of the income developed from his professional writing. He incorporated himself under Calfifornia law and became an employee of that company, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.

Ed Burroughs was also far-sighted in the matter of protecting and controlling his intellectual properties. TARZAN, for example, was trademarked in addition to the copyright taken out on each book. The Tarzan trademark has been licensed by the Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. company in many ways, most notably in film, radio, tv, newspapers, comic books and action figures. In 1999 one of the largest licensing projects undertaken by the company formed by ERB in 1924 will be the Disney animated feature, Tarzan of the Apes.

Interested applicants desiring to use the famous Tarzan name and mark should be advised the company has a history of moving with caution regarding any licensing projects. Over the years ERB himself and now his family, which are major stockholders in ERB, Inc., have zealously maintained wholesome and good this trademark which is known world wide.

It is also rumored (grin) that large amounts of cash are usually involved. This is as it should be in the world of business.
