Generating Barsoom Via Computer

Way back when (1980s) I wrote a QuickBasic program called FameName which did several things. One was Name The Baby from a collection of more than 15,000 names for boys and girls. More fun was added in creating a section that could name businesses from user input. For giggles an "Alien Names" randomly generated was included. During the last update to the program I included a series of data tables that would produce names based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom.
Below is 20 repeats using FameName's BARSLAT.SNL and BARSODD.SNL, which differ in syllable structure. One is based on Latin and and the other one odd constructions. These lists are similar--the results are less than desirable for writers, ie. just gosh darn too exotic; yet, almost as many are extremely intriguing.
Certain letter combinations were retained between both lists because of the common usage by Burroughs: Aaa; ia, io, ian, or, nai, for example. These tend to produce ugly results which suggests deliberate usage by the author when creating names for his characters. In real life the author or fun fan interested in naming conventions will discard 90% of these results as either AWKWARD, ODD, or ABTUSE.
The more amazing thing to consider is how perfect ERB's character names were in context of the stories. FameName uses the same building blocks the Grand Master obviously used in creating character names. The aid of instanteous random generation by computer makes it painfully obvious that syllables haphazardly collected required insight, imagination, and purpose to achieve a lasting impression in the reader's mind.
The Edit column indicates my personal thought process of "what makes a good name" for a character, place, thing, or creature. YOU might see a different combination of syllables/letters.
