BLACK THURDS (A Drabble)
Ras Thavas and the calot, on one of their many jaunts exploring Barsoom, came into a lost city with no name. A desolate dead sea bottom surrounded the crumbling ruins, edged by wind eroded mountains. Digging deeper into the city heart, the Master Mind of Mars noted relics, foundations, and other things of interest.
"Aha!" Ras Thavas cried after discovering a mural in a tower basement which had survived the march of time. On the wall, illuminated by his unhooded radium torch, was a funeral scene depicting a black race setting fire to two dozen bodies.
To the calot Ras Thavas remarked: "Four and Twenty Black Thurds baked in a pyre..." *

Voice of Tarzan
Tangor
On set JW, MS and ERB are waiting while cameras set up, lights, grips, last minute costumes.
"Janos," that's JW's birthname, "we need something for the victory cry of the bull ape."
"What do you suggest, Mr. Burroughs?"
"Yes, indeed," Maureen asked.
"Well, something like..." Ed threw back his head and gave a convincingly horrible roar.
The studio canteen waitress turned and asked, "More coffee, Mr. Burroughs?"
Ed scowled, "See? How to scare an audience?"
"Well, my stuff isn't scary..." JW bellows a long yodel.
Every head on the set snapped around in wonder.
"That's the ticket!" Ed cried. "Now make it scary!"
JW tried again. No shivers until a mouse ran across the set. Maureen shrieked, goats grazing nearby bleated and a pet camel named Clyde blew disgust in the middle of Johnny's yodel.
The director raced over. "Sound! Sound! Where's the Sound Man?"
The recordist, gear in hand, arrives. The director glares at the assembled cast and raises megaphone to lips. "Quiet on the set! Sound!" a thumbs up from the recordist and—
"—ACTION!"
JW's chest swelled, his head went back and...
The famous cry of the victorious bull ape was recorded (though Maureen wasn't all that happy when the little mouse crawled up her leg!).
